Suitable Makeup for Dark Skinned Women

If you have darker skin, it may be difficult to find the right shade for your complexion, especially if you have varying undertones or discolorations. In order to achieve a natural and flattering look, foundation that matches the skin tone is very important.

Choosing a Foundation For Your Skin Type

Knowing your skin type is imperative before selecting your foundation. Does your skin tend to be oily, dry, or combination? You will be able to choose the appropriate formula based on this. Knowing your skin type is key because there are so many different formulas. Similarly, if your skin tends to be oily and you have recurring breakouts, choosing a lightweight, water-based foundation would be your most suitable option. Alternatively, if you have mostly dry skin with a few dry patches, you may prefer a foundation that offers moisture to balance it out. For combination skin, which tends to be oily in the T-zone and comfortable everywhere else, the choice of foundation depends on the finish you desire.

Choosing a Foundation For Your Skin Tone

Once you know your skin type, you'll want to choose a foundation that matches your undertone. If you want to find out your skin's undertone, you can perform one or both of these tests:

  1. The wrist test: You can easily determine your skin's undertone by checking the color of your wrist veins. If your veins appear green, your skin has a warm undertone. On the other hand, if your veins appear blue, then your undertone is cool. If, however, you find that your veins are neither green nor blue, but rather somewhere in between, then you have a neutral undertone.
  2. The jewelry test: It is also possible to determine your undertone by understanding the types of jewelry that fit your complexion. If gold jewelry seems to complement your skin then you probably have a warm undertone, if silver jewelry fits your complexion better then you probably have a cool undertone. It is likely that your skin's undertone is neutral if you look good in both metals.

Choosing a Foundation For Your Desired Finish

Once you've determined your skin type and tone, it's time to choose a foundation that will give you the finish you want. It is important to choose the best foundation formula based on your needs and wants, as there are many foundation formulas offering different finishes. As an example, if you have oily skin, you may prefer a matte finish. If you have dry skin, you may prefer a dewy finish. If you have combination skin, you may opt for a foundation that offers a semi matte finish, which will give your skin a healthy glow. The following recommendations can be used to meet your needs:

Oily Skin

Combination Skin

Dry Skin
